The small community of BIU in Nigeria’s Borno state engaged youth to develop solutions to rising crime, vulnerability of youth and the lure of violent extremism.

USAID’s Northeast Connection’s solutions-based approach used a range of activities, including the increased involvement of youth in their communities through inter-community exchanges, leadership roles and efforts to address their sense of marginalization, as well as promoting positive roles for them in the community. In the same vein, the program will actively engage internally displaced persons, persons with disabilities and cultural minorities, among others, to increase their social bonds.

The Northeast Connection was implemented by Creative Associates International and local partners. The opinions expressed by the interviewees are their own and may not reflect the position of the U.S. government.
