Mali’s Online Sleuths: Preparing citizens to counter aggressive misinformation campaigns

Weeding through misinformation and the more sinister disinformation in Mali is a challenge for citizens and observers. “Fake news has contributed to, and exacerbated, community conflict,” according to one study.

USAID’s Peacebuilding, Stabilization & Reconciliation program supports efforts to promote credible, reliable information in Mali. Working with established organizations, the program has trained hundreds of journalists, youth and citizen sleuths to better understand the origins of misinformation and how to factcheck before sharing content.
