Natural resource management is a frequent source of conflict. Thanks to locally led efforts supported by USAID’s Tejiendo Paz program, a crisis was averted in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. The Peacebuilding Project, known as Tejiendo Paz, is an eight-year USAID-funded initiative that focuses on preventing social conflict and violence, as well as improving social cohesion and peacebuilding. During the past six years, the project has worked with 133 communities in the Western Highlands of Guatemala to develop and implement locally led action plans, known as “community visions,” that identify sources of conflict and prioritize solutions.
