Building support for LGBTQI+ persons in traditional Maya communities

LGBTQI+ persons in Guatemala’s Western Highlands face serious challenges and barriers in the traditional Maya communities, which are compounded by a lack of significant human rights protections. A Guatemalan NGO called Somos addresses these challenges with differentiated methodologies that focus on specific cultural traits of each Maya community. Somos is supported with a grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development and implemented by Creative Associates International.
