In May 2019, the USAID Reading for Success-National Program for Reading (RFS-NPR) project marked a decisive turning point in the sustainability of early grade Arabic language reading instruction in Morocco.
The Moroccan Ministry of National Education released a press statement announcing that starting in the 2019-2020 school year, the new Arabic language curriculum for grades 3 and 4 will be implemented in all primary schools nationwide.
Through this announcement, which is a key milestone for the USAID-funded project, the Ministry is instituting and promoting a new methodology for teaching reading in Arabic in all Moroccan primary schools and, thus, paying tribute to the efforts made in partnership with USAID education experts.
In September 2018, the Ministry of National Education implemented a new Arabic language curriculum for grades 1 and 2 after introducing the new teaching methodology and writing new textbooks for grades 1 and 2.
The USAID RFS-NPR project aims to expand USAID’s efforts to support the Government of Morocco’s strategic Vision 2015-2030, specifically “Project 7,” which is devoted to enhancing pedagogy. NPR’s goal is to improve student reading and writing competencies in grades 1to 4. The project runs from May 2017 through May 2022.
